China Expediting the Establishment of Bilateral Free Trade Area

Ma Xiuhong, Vice Minister of Commerce, said at the Seminar of Sino-Australian Free Trade Area (FTA) sponsored by Ministry of Commerce that a feasibility study on a possible Sino-Australian FTA went well and came to a close. Studies indicated that to set up Sino-Australian FTA would be beneficial to the two countries.

About 100 officials, experts and delegates of business community from both China and Australia took part in the Seminar and discussed topics of agriculture, manufacturing, service, investment and trade policies etc.

She said that since the signature of Sino-Australian Trade and Economic Framework by leaders of the two countries when President Hu Jintao visited Australia in Oct. 2003, bilateral trade and economic relations achieved a quite great development. The Framework said that both China and Australia would conduct a feasibility study on establishing Sino-Australian FTA within 2 years, which would be used for the strategic reference of launching FTA negotiation between the two countries.

Ma Xiuhong expressed that the study result by experts of the two countries in the past 15 months indicated that China and Australia were strongly complementary to each other in trade and economy. And to set up Sino-Australian FTA would be beneficial to each other, further tighten the friendly cooperation with mutual benefit and produce a new power to deepen bilateral trade and economic relations.

The minister stressed that the establishment of Sino-Australian FTA would bring forward certain pressure on China's agriculture and service industry. A special attention should be paid to the negotiation about possible Sino-Australian FTA in the future.

Deputy Secretary of Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Australia said that his country would carefully work over the feasibility study with China and decide in consideration of all factors.

Australia now is the 9th biggest trading partner of China and on the other hand, China is the third biggest trading partner, second biggest export market and import source of Australia. In 2004, bilateral trade amounted to US$20.39 billion, up by 50.3% compared with the previous year.
