Vice-Minister of Commerce Ma Xiuhong Made a Speech on Seminar of Mexico Trade and Investment Opportunities

On September 9,2004, Mexico Trade and Investment Opportunities Forum was held in Xiamen. About 150 Chinese and Mexican officials and businessmen attended the Forum.

Ma Xiuhong, Vice Minister of Commerce, was presented at the Forum and delivered an opening speech. She said that China and Mexico were important developing countries with international influence, and the two countries were strongly complementary to each other economically. To enhance mutual beneficial cooperation on trade and economy was in the interest of the two countries and two peoples and world peace and common development.

She said that in the last 32 years since establishment of diplomatic relations, bilateral economic and trade cooperation developed step by step. Bilateral trade between China and Mexico amounted to US$4.944 billion, hitting a new historical high. In January through July 2004, bilateral trade was up to a higher standing, amounting to US$3.805 billion. At present, Mexico was the second biggest trading partner of China in Latin America. Cross investment between the two countries was expanded gradually. According to statistics from Ministry of Commerce of PRC that Mexico was the third biggest investment objective country of China in Latin America. By June 2004, the Ministry approved or put on records 48 enterprises invested from China in Mexico. Of which investment from China were US$167 million. Meanwhile, Mexico invested 69 projects in China with agreed investment of US$100 million and actual investment were US$40.38 million.

Ma Xiuhong expressed that China-Mexico trade and economic relations has been the important part and impetus of bilateral relations. Both the two countries and peoples would obtain benefit through gradually expanding China-Mexico trade and economic cooperation, which was of much significance for reinforcing bilateral friendly relations in a long time and pushing development of bilateral relations.

She said that bilateral economic and trade cooperation of the two countries had a bright prospect. Achievements on China-Mexico economic and trade relations were attributed to common efforts of governments and experts in business community of the two countries. The Forum provided a chance for government and business community of China and Mexico to enhance communication, understanding and common development. She believed that if only the two sides utilize the opportunity with mutual efforts, could opportunities in more areas be created, double wins be realized and China-Mexico economic trade relations be completely developed on the principle of equality and mutual benefit.
